The Australian Business Awards are delighted to recognise the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) as recipients of the Award for Innovation. The achievement of NSWPF in developing their Business Continuity Framework demonstrates the capacity to conceive and apply a range of innovative approaches to Risk Management and Business Continuity in large, diverse organisations.
The NSWPF Business Continuity Framework (the Framework) recognises the crucial nature of planning to provide continuous delivery of essential policing services through periods of critical disruption. The community relies on police, among other emergency services, to maintain public order and safety in the face of potentially catastrophic disruptions, including terrorism or natural disaster. The Framework adopts an innovative approach to this planning through a logical step-by-step sequence designed to identify and prioritise a business’ operating activities, and develop solutions to six generic disruption scenarios.
The Framework recognises that Risk Management and Business Continuity Management are intrinsically linked, but applies an innovative approach in separating, rather than integrating, these two planning processes. The Framework allows large, complex organisations to assert greater utility, efficiency and flexibility. Rather than planning against a myriad of risk exposure incidents the Framework focuses on significantly fewer, more generic, disruption scenarios.
The Framework is a consequence based approach, rather than being incident driven. Rather than focusing on the length of time for which a business might operate without critical resources the Framework allows a business to identify the critical operating activities and focus their efforts on maintain these activities, as distinct from routine or discretionary activity.
