| About The Winner: | The Australian Business Awards are delighted to recognise Commercial Diving Services as recipients of Awards for Innovation, Best Product and Best Eco-Friendly Product. The achievements of Commercial Diving Services in developing ‘Hull Surface Treatment Technology;’ a world-first anti-fouling treatment for commercial shipping, have demonstrated a commitment to creating innovative new products that are environmentally safe and commercially viable. Hull Surface Treatment technology controls, kills and removes marine algae from the underwater surfaces of large ships. This technology has taken five years to develop and promises to revolutionise the process of de-fouling the hulls of ships. In the past commercial shipping has relied upon toxic Anti Fouling paint to manage the marine algae. In an effort to develop a more cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative Commercial Diving Services developed an innovative approach based on trial, experimentation and hard work. The result is a new non-chemical, non-abrasive process to combat and remove marine slime, bacteria and algae from ships’ hulls. The risk of biological invasion from marine pests into the local marine eco-system of ports and harbours is effectively neutralised because the live organisms are not removed from the hull, but are killed and removed by the hydraulic force of the ocean after the ship leaves port. This reduces the risk of introducing marine pests into delicate eco-systems, and the potential for biological invasion represented by hull fouling. The system also has the further consequence of reducing the fuel oil consumption of commercial shipping and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. |
